Digital Media
Nowhere is technology more fluid and evolving than within the digital realm. Massey’s digital media programme is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the contexts, processes and techniques of animation, video, interactivity and motion graphics. Through interaction with a wide range of media, students develop comprehensive technical skills while being challenged to research, theorise and generate ideas to achieve sophisticated digital solutions. Rich and innovative projects are created within a diverse range of traditional and emerging environments. Students discover that the need to adapt is crucial - what is hot today may be outdated and replaced tomorrow. We ensure access to the latest and most relevant equipment - computers and software, HD cameras, a motion tracking system and a specialist digital media studio.
Whether through telling cinematic stories, making characters move, exploring virtual space, developing online strategies, animating graphics, incorporating audio and effects, designing interfaces, databases, games or touch-screen applications, our digital media graduates are well positioned for tomorrow's digital media industries. Professionals recognise the abilities of our students, with many graduates being snapped up for work locally at Weta, Sauce, Sidhe interactive or many other local and internationally recognised companies. For postgraduate study, our supervisory faculty are engaged in a broad range of research inquiry across digital media and related issues that will cater for, or even inspire, your area of specialism.
First Year Students across the BFA (Hons) and BDes (Hons) share a core suite of papers in their first year.
Second Year: This year provides you with an opportunity to sample the core areas and explore the fundamental principles of animation, interactivity motion graphics and digital video.
Third Year: In your third year you will develop and refine your specialty areas through specific assignments that develop technical skills and contextual awareness within a variety of digital environments.
Fourth Year: You will undertake your final major project, combining and focussing skills and knowledge into a research-lead, self-motivated project.
